Friedrich Wilhelm Hendel (also FW Hendel , born October 7, 1887 in Dresden , † May 20, 1947 in Leipzig ) was a German antiquarian , bookseller and publisher .

Life

In 1919 Hendel took over the Carl Milde second-hand bookshop in Leipzig, which was founded in 1874. On March 1, 1924, he founded the "FW Hendel Verlag" in Leipzig. In 1925 he acquired the company shell of the publishing house and antiquarian bookshop " List & Francke ", which had been founded by Felix List and Richard Hermann Francke in Leipzig in 1862. The FW Hendel publishing house then had other headquarters in Meersburg on Lake Constance (from 1925 to 1937) and in Naunhof near Leipzig (from 1937 to 1974). The publisher became known for the publication of historical works and facsimiles (such as the " Zimmerische Chronik " 1932, Hartmann Schedels " Weltchronik " 1933, Adam Lonitzer's "Kreuterbuch" 1934 or Ulrich von Richental's "Chronicle of the Council of Constance" 1936) and illustrated works by World literature in bibliophile design.

In 1977/78 the List & Francke antiquarian bookshop in Meersburg was reactivated when the widow Elsbeth Hendel (1888–1984) handed over the company to her grandson Christian Lenhardt (* 1954).
