Friedrich Wilhelm Kalb

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Wilhelm Kalb (born December 25, 1889 in Munich , † October 16, 1977 in Rottach-Egern ), was a German medic , painter and draftsman .

Life

In 1874 the parents, Eduard Kalb (1842 – after 1908), banker and supplementary judge at the Nuremberg Commercial Court, and Rosa, née. Garter (* 1850) moved from Nuremberg to Munich with their three sons Georg, Eduard and Rudolf, who were born in Nuremberg . Here the daughter Rosa, another son Ludwig Friedrich and finally the youngest son Friedrich Wilhelm were born.

After attending elementary school , Friedrich Wilhelm Kalb entered the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich in 1899 , where he became a composer in 1908, like his brothers Georg and Eduard before, with the later publisher Heinrich Beck (1889–1973) and Paul Seyboth (* 1888) who have passed the Abitur exam . He initially studied medicine and received his doctorate in 1916. med. In 1914 he married his fellow student Isabella Müller, who later practiced as a doctor in Munich. Their son Georg was born in 1919. The marriage ended in divorce in 1924. In 1928 Kalb entered into a second marriage with Anna Marie Dopfer († 1970).

His entry into the drawing school of Carl Johann Becker-Gundahl on October 29, 1919 is documented. Until 1921 he trained as a painter at the Munich Art Academy. He was a member of the Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft (MKG) in the Reichsverband Bildender Künstler Deutschlands (RvBK) and after the Second World War - with Claus Bergen , Paul Erbe and Fritz Schwimbeck - on the board of the Neue Münchner Kunst-Genossenschaft (NMKG). He was friends with the composer Heinrich Kaspar Schmid , who set some of his poems to music. Kalb mostly worked in Munich, but in 1944 he moved to Rottach-Egern, where he died at the age of almost 88.

activity

Friedrich Wilhelm Kalb initially worked as a landscape painter . For example, in the annual Munich exhibitions in the Glaspalast in 1921 he showed the paintings Autumn and Forest Gorge , 1922 an Evening Landscape and a Farm , 1923 an Isar Landscape , 1924 a Bright Landscape and 1930 a Winter Landscape . Increasingly he also exhibited motifs from Greek mythology , literature and various collections of fairy tales , such as pen drawings for Heinrich Heine's Atta Troll in 1923 , the painting Daphne in 1924 , an Amazon fight in 1927 or a drawing of Heracles in 1930 . With the trilogy Search (Daphne) - Find (Eros and Psyche) - Losing (Eurydice) he participated in the Great German Art Exhibition in Munich in 1942 . With other topics he approached the National Socialist ideology . With the painting Werden he was represented in the exhibition “ German Artists and the SS ”, which was organized by the Reichsführer SS in Breslau in 1944 .

Many of his drawings and oil paintings, which were exhibited in the "Great German Art Exhibition" in the Haus der Kunst in Munich from 1937 to 1944 , were acquired by Adolf Hitler for his private collection, and another by the Düsseldorf Gauleiter Friedrich Karl Florian . In the artist lexicon (1956; see list of literature) published by Hans Vollmer, which is based on a communication from the artist, it is significant that Kalb's works, which were created between 1937 and 1942, were destroyed in the war.

From 1946, Kalb was again represented in the annual Munich exhibitions in the Haus der Kunst with depictions of landscapes, mythological figures and scenes and some portraits . Kalb's works were acquired by, among others, the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München and the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen in Munich as well as the Museum Folkwang in Essen .
