His functions included the management of the Krupp Group's labor camps, in which concentration camp inmates and prisoners of war had to do forced labor . He was jointly responsible for the abuse and systematic malnutrition in the camps. Together with Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach and eleven other senior employees, he was indicted in the Nuremberg Krupp Trial and sentenced to 12 years in prison in July 1948 for crimes in connection with prisoner-of-war and slave labor. Only Alfried Krupp himself and his colleague Erich Müller received a comparably high prison sentence. His defense attorney was Wolfgang Pohle . On January 31, 1951, von Bülow was pardoned and released from prison in the Landsberg War Crimes Prison .

According to the judgment of the court, only von Bülow and Ewald Loeser , in contrast to the other accused Krupp managers, were not members of the NSDAP .
