Friedrichstrasse (Wernigerode)

The Friedrichstrasse is one of the main urban roads in the city of Wernigerode in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt . It runs from the city center in a south-westerly direction through the district of Hasserode to the end of the town in the direction of Drei Annen Hohne and Schierke . At the level crossing with the Harzquerbahn , it changes directly into Amtsfeldstraße.

history

The name Friedrichstraße comes from the 18th century and refers to King Friedrich II of Prussia , who from 1768 had the colonist village Friedrichsthal built between (Ober-) Hasserode and Wernigerode. Originally the name was Long Street .

At the beginning of Friedrichstrasse, not far from the Western Gate, a monument today commemorates King Friedrich II and his importance for Wernigerode. In the years 1950–1990 it was named Lenin Street .

Originally , the Harz could be reached via Friedrichstrasse, coming from the “flat country” and crossing the city center of Wernigerode via Breite and Westernstrasse .

On the north and south sides of Friedrichstrasse, numerous listed half-timbered and other houses have been preserved to this day. According to the list of cultural monuments in Wernigerode, these include :
