From the canning factory to Frisco Findus AG

The Bernhard & Co canning factory was founded in Rorschach in 1886 . The former employee Etienne Perret took over the factory facilities under the name "Coro" (Conservenfabrik Rorschach AG) in 1916. This is later followed by the “Roco” brand. The food preservation experienced in the following years due to the strong demand of the military and the increasing need for a quickly prepared meal an upswing.

Start of the production of frozen products

During the Second World War it became more difficult to obtain the raw materials necessary for canning. The management of the Roco canning factory wanted to build up a second mainstay and started manufacturing frozen products. On April 15, 1942, the shareholders of Roco founded Frisco Kühlobst & Gemüse AG . Eighteen different types of vegetables, eleven fruits and four specialties were offered under the “Frisco” brand.

Expansion to the market leader

Business with frozen products was going well, and the decision was soon made to launch an ice cream under the “Frisco” brand. In March 1960, the first ice cream available throughout Switzerland came onto the market. In the following years Frisco expanded its range of ice cream and invented new cream and water lollipops, some of which are still sold today.

Frisco and Findus merge

Ice cream and frozen products experienced an upswing in the 1960s and 1970s. The consumption of ice cream and frozen products more than tripled. Roco therefore decided to merge its deep-freeze and distribution organizations with those of Nestlé (owner Findus). The frozen and ice cream market was managed by the joint company Frisco-Findus AG . Nestlé and Roco each had a 50% stake in the new company .

Takeover of Frisco-Findus AG by Nestlé

In 1980 Nestlé took over the majority of the shares in Roco. Nestlé initiated a restructuring process, whereby the production and marketing of canned products were transferred and the production and distribution of frozen products and ice cream were concentrated in the Rorschach location. In 1991 Nestlé took over the remaining shares in Frisco-Findus AG. Since then, Frisco Findus has been a business unit within Nestlé Switzerland.
