Fritz Exner

Fritz Exner (born April 29, 1926 in Nassau (Lahn) ; † March 24, 2017 in Bad Homburg ) was a German historian and patron .

Live and act

Exner studied history and political science at the Philipps University of Marburg , the University of Chicago and the University of Paris . In 1953 he received his doctorate in Marburg with a thesis on "Cape Colony and 'Representative Government' 1820–1861: The emergence of colonial self-government in South Africa". He then worked in the commercial area, first at Friedrich Krupp AG in Essen and then at Lurgi GmbH in Frankfurt am Main, before retiring in 1989.

In 2000, Exner and his wife Helga Exner founded the Fritz and Helga Exner Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting research in Southeast Europe . The foundation annually awards the sponsorship award for outstanding achievements in the field of Southeast European research (usually for dissertations), grants to young scientists from Germany and Southeast Europe for shorter research stays in the respective other region, and has financed the Dr. Fritz Exner Colloquium for young scientists in research on Southeast Europe.

In 2004 Exner was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.

Exner was an honorary member of the Southeast Europe Society .
