Fritz Schieler (born May 7, 1899 in Teningen , † June 1, 1970 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Life and work

Schieler initially worked as a locksmith, later entered the municipal administration and worked for the Freiburg city administration. After the National Socialists came to power , he was dismissed from the public service in 1933. From 1936 to 1939 he was imprisoned in a penitentiary for "preparation for high treason". He was then drafted into service at the Rhodia works in Freiburg on the grounds that he was "unworthy of defense" .

Fritz Schieler's son Rudolf Schieler (1928–2012) was also a politician.

politics

Schieler joined the SPD during the Weimar Republic and was a councilor in Teningen from 1924 to 1933. After 1945 he took part in the re-establishment of the Social Democratic Party in Baden and in August 1948 he succeeded the deceased member of parliament Franz Geiler in the Baden state parliament, to which he belonged until 1952. From 1952 to 1964 he was a member of the Baden-Württemberg state parliament , from 1960 to 1964 he was a “colleague” of his son Rudolf, who was also an MP at this time. From 1948 until his retirement in 1964 he was the first mayor of the city of Freiburg.

Honors

Fritz-Schieler-Platz ▼ was named after him in the Weingarten district of Freiburg .

In 2013, a street in the Teningen industrial area was named after Schieler.
