Franz Geiler (born June 14, 1879 in Nesselried , † August 14, 1948 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German trade unionist and politician ( SPD ).

Life

Franz Geiler was born the son of a day laborer. After attending primary school in Nesselried, he began an apprenticeship as a Schumacher in Offenburg in 1893 , which he completed in 1895 with the journeyman's examination. He initially worked as a journeyman shoemaker, was also involved in trade unions and was a workers' secretary in Strasbourg from May 1906 to June 1912 . At the same time he worked as chairman of the local trade union cartel and from 1906 to 1908 as a social democratic member of the Strasbourg municipal council . From July 1912 to March 1913 he worked as a workers secretary in Plauen , where he was also chairman of the trade union cartel. From April 1913 to August 1914 he worked as an editor for the people's newspaper in Mulhouse (Alsace) . He then took part in the First World War as a soldier until December 1918 .

Geiler worked for a short time as an editor in Offenburg in 1919 and from 1919 to 1920 worked in the same function for the Free Press in Lüdenscheid . He then worked from 1920 to 1930 as an employee for the community and state workers' association and from 1930 to 1933 as an employee for the general association of employees in public companies and the movement of people and goods in Freiburg. From 1922 to 1933 he was Freiburg city ​​councilor , in 1919 a member of the Baden National Assembly and from March to June 1933 a member of the state parliament of the Republic of Baden . However, he was unable to actually exercise his parliamentary mandate, as he was arrested after the National Socialists came to power and interned in Freiburg prison and in Ankenbuck concentration camp until December 1933 . After the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944 , he was detained again from August to December 1944 in Freiburg and Karlsruhe prison and in the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp .

After the end of the Second World War , Geiler became chairman of the Antifa committee in Freiburg in May 1945. From November 1945 until his death he was first mayor (since 1946 first alderman and deputy mayor ) of the city of Freiburg. He participated in the re-establishment of the SPD and was chairman of the Freiburg Social Democrats from 1945 to 1948. At the same time he acted as chairman of the press committee of the party newspaper Das Volk and as chairman of the local political committee in the SPD district of South Baden. From 1946 to 1947 he was a member of the Advisory State Assembly of the State of Baden and from 1947 until his death a member of the Baden State Parliament . From November 1946 he held the office of vice-president in both parliaments. His parliamentary mandate was taken over by Fritz Schieler , his office as vice-president of the state parliament was taken over by Philipp Martzloff .
