Life
Fritz Schmoll called Eisenwerth was - not least because of his quieter manner - especially at the beginning of his career in the shadow of his older brother Karl Schmoll von Eisenwerth (1879–1948), who, however, promoted him on his way with his good relationships. His father was the civil engineer Anton Adolph Schmoll called Eisenwerth (1834-1918).
In 1914, an artist consortium under Fritz Schmoll called Eisenwerth acquired the renowned, reform-oriented “teaching and experimental studio for applied and free art” , a training facility for artists and craftsmen in Munich, which was co-founded and led by the painter Wilhelm von Debschitz - probably also because of financial difficulties - gave up. As a workshop school, the “Debschitz School” was at the forefront of contemporary endeavors in the art school reform with the aim of bringing together visual and applied arts and allowing them to flow directly into the interests of everyday life. Fritz 'brother Karl was one of the teachers there from 1904 to 1905.
After moving to the city of Munich, which was leading in the field of handicrafts around 1900, he soon made a name for himself with works in various artistic techniques of the Art Nouveau handicrafts. From him come here, among other trinkets , dinner services of metal, various commodities and textile artistic works.
A particular focus of his work, however, were designs for furniture and sculptures; most of his furniture designs were also carried out. From the materials wood, metal and ceramics he initially created mainly small sculptures (such as ivory carvings and small figures), medals and plaques , later also larger sculptural works (portrait and building sculptures, memorials and tombs, fountains).
As a rule, he carried out all work phases in the production of his sculptural works by his own hand, from the draft to the final finishing.
Many of his sculptural works were based on a religious theme. From the 1930s until shortly before his death, he did work for the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge , from which a large part of his orders came.
