Life

In 1907 Friedrich Wilhelm Schulz was accepted to study at the Berlin Art Academy in Berlin-Charlottenburg. His teachers were Maximilian Schäfer , Martin Körte , Hanke, Paul Friedrich Meyerheim and Carl Saltzmann . He was also trained by Théophile Steinlen in Paris. He soon began to paint under the artist name Fritz W. Schulz and marked his pictures with the FSW sign. In 1909 he was appointed lieutenant in the reserve and was stationed with the infantry in Regiment 24, Neuruppin. In 1914 he was drafted immediately, soon wounded, and therefore started flying. He spent the First World War as a pilot, shipyard officer and captain. In 1914 he married Martha Elise Maria Kühn (born February 24, 1888 in Neuruppin; † December 10, 1966 in Hamburg). The marriage had two daughters, Ilse Agnes Piper, nee Schulz (born August 15, 1915; † September 13, 2006 in Hamburg) and Käthe Luise Schulze-Wenck, b. Schulz (born December 16, 1916; † September 30, 2010 in Itzstedt)

At first Schulz lived in Berlin and had several studios there, on Holsteiner Ufer, in Wilsnackerstraße and finally on Kantstraße. In the heyday of his work, the painter was hardly represented in art exhibitions because he refused to join the NSDAP . During the Second World War the family was bombed out and driven to Neuruppin , from where they fled to Aabenraa in Denmark in 1945. From June 6, 1945 to October 24, 1948, Schulz was housed with his wife and children in the Oksbøl refugee camp in Denmark, where he was culturally and artistically involved. During this time he also made maps for school lessons and worked as a teacher.

In 1948 the family was accepted into the French zone and lived in an apartment in Aldingen . On March 7, 1949 Schulz was recognized by the Spruchkammer III, Az. 16 / KW / 2091 as unencumbered. In 1951 he moved to Stuttgart and from 1955 Schulz lived in Hamburg-Langenhorn .

The estate is administered by the three grandchildren Joachim, Hellmut and Jürgen Schulze-Wenck.
