Fritz Winkler (chemist)
Fritz Winkler (born June 22, 1888 in Zeil am Main , † April 10, 1950 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) was a German chemist.
life and work
After completing his studies, Winkler began his career at BASF , where he worked from 1916 to 1950. During investigations to optimize the Haber-Bosch process, Winkler discovered the principle of fluidized bed gasification of fine-grained brown coal in the Winkler generator . The gases hydrogen and carbon monoxide mainly obtained in this process are used in the synthesis of ammonia and methanol . The first large-scale fluidized bed gasification was put into operation as early as 1926. Using a modified high-temperature Winkler process (HTW process), other organic substances, such as municipal waste, are now gasified under pressure.
He was buried in the cemetery in Ludwigshafen-Friesenheim.
