content

The band wanted "to keep the music flowing as much as possible. The strange title that Magnus [Öström] had come up with also fitted in. Gagarin was the first person who could ever see the earth from space. Von up there in the loneliness he had an overview of everything that was happening below. We liked this idea as the title and idea of the whole album. "

All pieces are original compositions of the trio. The title track and The Chapel , In the Face of Day , Southwest Loner are calm, atmospheric ballads . The title track in particular “makes it very clear why EST was effective beyond a jazz audience. They had songs with choruses and themes that were suitable for the radio. They were often ethereal and gentle, their contours corresponded to classical music ”. Subway is more ponderous with oriental-like bass runs, Dodge the Dodo is heavily influenced by rock with percussive drums and whipping cymbals and a piano ostinato . The bass is electronically alienated and takes on the role of a lead guitar .

rating

In the British magazine Jazzwise the album reached number 68 in the list The 100 Jazz Albums That Shook the World . The reviewer from Nordische Musik praised the album: “The boys have fun with modern jazz with class and a lot of“ groove ”: Hardly any other pianist plays so rhythmically funky , so related to pop in his melodic improvisations. You don't exactly expect rumbling beats like Dodge the Dodo from a jazz combo. "

The album is a step by Svensson, Berglund and Öström towards their unmistakable sound of a lyrical-melodic jazz with electronic elements. According to the reviewer at jazzmusicarchives.com, it is less polished than the previous albums and a promise of what the band would later show. It's "nowhere near the trio's best album and still not their real nu jazz sound."
