From Monument to Masses (FMTM) was an American post-rock band based in San Francisco , California and New York City , New York .

history

From Monument to Masses was founded in autumn 2000 by Francis Choung, Sergio Robledo-Moderazo and Matthew Solberg. In 2002 the first self-titled EP was released on Dim Mak (including Pretty Girls Make Graves , Bloc Party ). In 2003 the first LP The Impossible Leap In One Hundred Simple Steps was released , also on Dim Mak . In 2005, the remix album Schools Of Thought Contend was released, supplemented by two studio tracks (with a subtitle , Thunderbirds are now ). For a European tour in 2008, an MCD / single Beyond God & Elvis was released on the Golden Antenna label . In January 2009 the third studio album On Little Known Frequencies was also released on Golden Antenna.

From the very beginning, From Monument to Masses made a name for themselves not only through their music but also through their political commitment. They are to be assigned to the left anti-imperialist / globalization-critical spectrum, which is shown above all by samples and record / song titles.

In April 2010, the band announced their split.

style

From Monument to Masses play instrumental post rock close to Tristeza or the old Mogwai , whose intensity and complexity resemble orchestral bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor is reminiscent, but is much more rocky and allows comparisons with the late Unwound or Turing Machine . The songs, which usually exceed the 5-minute limit, convey the political message by means of recorded speech samples .
