The district league Gera 1978/79 was the 27th season of the district league Gera of the German Football Association .
Master and advanced into the DDR-Liga was the BSG Motor Zeulenroda . The season was marked by the three-way battle of the future champions with the league relegated SG Dynamo Gera and last year's fourth Eisenberg.
The BSG Wismut Gera II, who had returned from the junior league, was not integrated into normal game operations and played against each participant twice in mandatory friendship games.
With the BSG Tractor Frießnitz and the BSG Clothing Tanna, two communities as absolute newbies gave their calling cards for the first time in the top division of the Gera district.
In the subordinate district classes which rose BSG Chemie Kahla , the BSG bismuth Berga, the BSG progress Münchenbernsdorf previous climbers BSG Motor Hermsdorf II from. The latter were still placed in the secured midfield for the half-series, but later lost all motivation due to the looming relegation of the first team from the GDR league .
For the following season, the three season winners of the district class, the BSG Wismut Seelingstädt, the BSG Progress Pößneck and the BSG Turbine Auma rose. BSG Motor Hermsdorf returned from the GDR league after several seasons and BSG Chemie Schwarza after only one season.
