Fuckland is a feature film released in 2000 by the Argentinian director José Luis Marquès , who also wrote the script. The film follows the Dogma 95 concept (Dogma # 8).

action

After the Argentine attempt to wrest the Falkland Islands from the United Kingdom in the Falklands War of 1982 failed, the Argentinian Fabián (Fabián Stratas) wants to use the opening of the islands to Argentinian visitors for a new attempt at conquest. His plan is to seduce women on the islands and produce offspring with them, so that one day the Falkland Islands will come under permanent Argentine control. From Chile (there has been no flight connection to Argentina since the war) he flies to the islands, then first familiarizes himself with the local conditions and passes the time a little with small talk. In an internet café, Fabián meets Camilla (Camilla Heaney), whom he had previously seen during a church service. He manages to establish closer contact with her and ultimately to induce her to have sex with him. Now that his mission has been fulfilled, Fabián leaves again, but Camilla left a message for him on his film. She accuses Fabián of being a vain macho, whom she met during a low point in her life.

The film shows the strong nationalism of the Falklanders in many scenes, for example a message posted on a window to Argentine visitors ("Argentinians are welcome as long as they recognize our right to self-determination") or in different camera angles (the street sign of Thatcher Street or the bar sign of the Victory Bar). Fabian’s cynical machismo contrasts with the behavior of the residents, who are at least polite towards him, even when he reveals his origins. Furthermore, the ongoing mining of the islands and the economic changes following the war are shown or discussed. Since Fabián Stratas operates the dogma-typical hand-held camera himself or he B. was placed on tables, the film takes on a pseudo-documentary character in connection with the exploration of the Falkland Islands, so that parallels were drawn to the Blair Witch Project .

background

Fuckland was filmed primarily in and around Stanley , the capital. Aside from the scenes with Camilla Heaney, the Falkland Islands residents were unaware that they were being filmed. When the governor of the islands found out about this, he said that if he had known, he would have prevented the filming and it was decided not to show the film in the Falkland Islands.

The cost of Fuckland was $ 400,000 and the film was shown at the London Film Festival and the Sundance Film Festival, among others .

Like many other dogma films, Fuckland violates some of the dogma rules, in this case by subsequently recording music and naming the director in the credits.

reception

The film was received negatively in a number of reviews, for example Christopher Null gave 1½ out of 5 stars in a short review on filmcritic.com and criticized the monotony of Fabian’s daily rituals, which run through a large part of the film. In her review published on villagevoice.com , Amy Taubin found the initial topic so absurd that the film was doomed to failure from the start.

The Guardian went into more detail on the film in a background report and a subsequent review, Peter Bradshaw saw in the latter Fuckland as a captivating subversion that you hardly get to see in this way.
