description

Branches with leaves

The Fujian cypress is an evergreen tree that reaches heights of growth of 25 to 35 meters and a trunk diameter of 2 meters. The aromatic, brownish-gray bark comes off early in long strips. The crown is pyramidal. The scale-shaped leaves are about 2 mm long on old trees and about 8 mm long on young trees.

The Fujian cypress is single sexed ( monoecious ). The male cones are oval to cylindrical and about 2.5 mm long. The female cones are almost spherical and only have a diameter of about 25 mm, they each have five to eight cone scales. Two winged seeds develop per fertile cone scale, they are about 4 mm long, the two wings are very unequal.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22, rarely 24.

distribution

The distribution of the Fujian cypress extends from China to Vietnam . In China it is the eastern provinces of Zhejiang , Fujian , Guizhou and Yunnan . In Vietnam they grow in the provinces of Dac Lac, Gia Lai, Ha Bac, Ha Giang, Ha Tinh, Hoa Binh, Kon Tum, Lai Chau, Lam Dong, Lao Cai, Nghe An, Son La, Thanh Hoa, Tuyen Quang, Vinh Phu and Yen Bai. It is a shade intolerant species. It grows best in mild climates with abundant rainfall. These trees thrive in Vietnam at altitudes above 900 meters.

use

The aromatic, light wood used to be made into coffins. In some areas it was used in house building. It was also used to make furniture and art objects.

Distillation, especially of root wood, results in an oil that is used in cosmetics and in the manufacture of medicines.
