Fujio Masuoka
Fujio Masuoka ( Japanese 舛 岡 富士 雄 , Masuoka Fujio ; born May 8, 1943 in Takasaki , Gunma Prefecture ) is a Japanese electrical engineer and the inventor of flash memory .
Masuoka studied at Tōhoku University , where he received his doctorate in 1971 with a dissertation on the inductance of semiconductors. In the same year he accepted a position at Toshiba . There he was primarily interested in the technology of non-volatile data storage devices , which make it possible to obtain stored information without a power supply. In 1980 he invented the flash memory in NOR technology and in 1986 in NAND technology . However, Toshiba's investment in these technologies was initially too hesitant, leading to Intel becoming the lead company in this sector. In 1994, Masuoka left Toshiba to accept a professorship at Tohoku University . Since 2005 he has been the technical director of Unisantis Electronics , whose goal is to develop integrated circuits with three-dimensional transistors.
