Fukushima Tetsuji ( Japanese 福島 鉄 次 ; born February 19, 1914 in Fukushima Prefecture , Japan ; † 1992 ) was a Japanese manga artist .

From January 1949 to February 1956 his science fiction comic series Sabaku no Maō ( 砂 漠 の 魔王 , dt. "The devil of the desert") appeared in the Shōnen Shōjo Bōkenō ( 少年 少女 冒 険 王 ), a manga magazine for boys and girls, which was published as a sister magazine to Bōkenō magazine by Akita Shoten . The oriental fairy tale about Aladdin and the magic lamp inspired him to write this manga . Sabaku no Maō was published in nine anthologies after the magazine was published. The drawing style of the manga shows the influence of North American comics.

Hayao Miyazaki called an episode in Sabaku no Maō a great inspiration for his film The Castle in Heaven : “ As a student, I read it [Sabaku no Maō] again and again with a pounding heart. There was an episode about a gem that gave you the power to fly. I was so moved by it that I wanted to make a film about a magic stone. "

Fukushima's other works include Inazuma Dōji ( い な ず ま 童子 ; 1954), Kaijin Z ( 怪人 Z ) and Shippū Kenshi ( 疾風 剣 士 ; 1956–1957).
