The FullDome Festival is the most important international festival for the presentation and awarding of fulldome shows. Since it was founded in 2007, the festival has established itself as a discussion forum for the technical and artistic development of the young medium of 360 ° total dome projection . The FullDome Festival usually takes place on a May weekend in the Zeiss Planetarium in Jena . Only newly produced fulldome shows by professional, student and independent producers and media artists from all over the world are shown.

The multi-day program is accompanied by workshops, lectures and performances. Friday is dedicated to student contributions, on Saturday the best professional and student contributions will be awarded at the festival gala. Carl Zeiss AG has been donating prizes for the best student submissions (Performance Award, Creative Award and Audience Award) since 2008 . Endowed special prizes are also awarded on key topics (e.g. “Bauhaus in the Stars” in 2009 and “VisuaLiszt” in 2011). The festival is aimed at a specialist audience as well as the interested public.

"The Janus". Fulldome film award for best contributions to the Jena FullDome Festival.

The 7th FullDome Festival took place from May 29th to June 1st, 2013 under the motto "Ornamental Dances". A total of 80 FullDome productions with participants from 17 countries were shown. The new category “Spatial Sound Wave” with special productions for spatial sounds was very popular. Prize money of 4,000 euros and valuable material prizes were acquired for the festival. For the first time, the festival awarded the "Janus", a statue based on other international prizes in the film industry. The jury honored a total of nine fulldome presentations with the Janus.

The next, 12th festival is planned for the period 23 May to 26 May 2018. The ambiguous motto for 2018 is: "The Power of twelve".

timeline

1st FullDome Festival 2007

The first FullDome Festival took place on March 16 and 17, 2007. It was largely initiated by Micky Remann, media artist and lecturer at the Bauhaus University Weimar, Faculty of Media, Professorship of Media Events. The specialist course "Celestial Science, Media Spaces" led by Remann in the winter semester 2006/2007 was described in the course catalog: "The subject of the event is the development of content and staging for a new projection system in the Jena planetarium".

It wasn't just technical hurdles to be overcome. The question of the aesthetics of room-filling images was just as exciting as the discussion about possible content. While the imagery typical of the planetarium had already reached a certain maturity, artistic, filmic or documentary approaches were still in their infancy. The idea of a public festival was born so that viewing and evaluating student work was not restricted to the university framework. Remann allied himself with the director of the Jena Planetarium, Jürgen Hellwig, and involved Prof. Rotraut Pape from the Hfg Offenbach, Eduard Thomas from the media dome of the Kiel University of Applied Sciences and Prof. Tom Duscher from the Muthesius Art Academy in Kiel in the preparations. The response to the 1st FullDome Festival made it clear that the new laser full-dome projection in the Jena Planetarium not only fascinated the audience interested in astronomy. The festival attracted a young scene of media artists and dome filmmakers who approached the liberation from the confines of the rectangular screen with curiosity and a willingness to experiment. The short, mostly 2 to 10 minute long contributions to the FullDome Festival worked with ambient images, game scenes, visualized music and effects that are only possible with the dome projection. The festival program with a work-in-progress character gave a first glimpse into the think tank of the 360 ° pioneers.

  • Creative Award (best idea)
  • Performance Award (best implementation)
  • Audience Award.

A jury of experts decided on “Best Idea” and “Best Implementation”; the audience award was determined by the visitors to the FullDome Festival on April 26th by voting slip. The FullDome Award is intended to honor student work that makes the opportunities of the new medium visible in an imaginative and exemplary manner. The aim is to motivate students to continue working with the medium of full-dome projection.

The festival focused on artistic experiments in the 360-degree dome and student short films.

3rd FullDome Festival 2009

In the three years of its existence, the FullDome Festival in the Zeiss Planetarium Jena has established itself as the leading forum for dealing with the young and innovative medium FullDome - meanwhile with worldwide response and participation. A productive exchange of experience has developed in particular between the Bauhaus University Weimar (Faculty of Media, Professorship for Media Events), the HFG Offenbach , the Hessian Film and Media Academy , the Kiel University of Applied Sciences, the Kiel University of Applied Sciences' media dome, the Muthesius Art University in Kiel and the ARTS Lab from the University of New Mexico , Albuquerque (USA). At the Bauhaus University Weimar, the project module "Bauhaus in the Stars" was offered under the direction of lecturer Micky Remann in the 2008/2009 winter semester.

Not least because of this video conference, ARTS Lab students sent in contributions to the FullDome Festival, one of which received a “Bauhaus in the Stars” award. Two of the films that received a “Bauhaus in the Stars Award” were also shown on public television, in the Unicato special program “Young Bauhaus Today” (June 4, 2009 MDR , July 5, 2009 3sat ). The program presented works that arose in the tradition and in the examination of Bauhaus ideas, including "Raumschindel" by Robert Sawallisch (Bauhaus-Uni Weimar) and "Apocalypse Bauhaus" by Thomas Bannier (HfG Offenbach), both of which were included received a “Bauhaus in den Sternen Award”.

4th FullDome Festival 2010

With the increasing number of commercial fulldome shows for planetariums, the need grew to present new productions at the FullDome Festival to the broadest and most interested audience possible. In coordination with the “Immersive Film Festival” in Espinho , Portugal , the FullDome Festival 2010 (May 4-8, 2010) opened its doors for the first time to full-length shows. The response to the 4th festival was enormous. The festival attracted more than a thousand visitors to Jena, the site of the oldest large planetarium in the world. In the course of the five-day events, the festival guests experienced 75 productions - including world premieres - from China, Canada, Australia, the USA, Portugal, Germany and many other countries.

The “Students Night”, reserved for Friday evening and the highlight of every FullDome Festival, showed trends, topics and techniques that go beyond the astronomical themes typical of planetariums. For the first time the Imersa Forum was held for the FullDome Festival.

5th Fulldome Festival 2011

Recording from the FullDome Festival 2011

As a highlight of the Thuringian Franz Liszt Year 2011, on the occasion of the composer's 200th birthday, the special “VisuaLiszt” program took place at the 5th FullDome Festival from May 12 to 14, 2011. Outstanding work on this topic was awarded the "VisuaLiszt Award" by the Thuringian Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs. What was noticeable at the 5th FullDome Festival was a noticeably increased presence in the media. The Tagesthemen reported on it, and a multi-page report entitled “Liszt Reloaded” appeared in the DB magazine Mobil issue 3/2011.

Fulldome artists from all over the world were invited to produce compositions by Franz Liszt as the basis for music visualizations for the fulldome medium. The awards, endowed with € 7,500, are intended to be an incentive for professional, student and independent producers alike to stage and interpret Liszt's musical ideas in a new and multimedia way. A jury of experts determined the price categories and assessed the entries. As in previous years, visitors to the Jena FullDome Festival were able to choose an audience award. The best contributions were presented at the 2011 Festival Gala.

Fulldome expands the possibilities of visual, spatial and cinematic representation. Dealing with immersive media experiences in 360 ° is an exciting meeting point for media artists and Liszt friends. The “VisuaLiszt Award” invited the international fulldome and visual music scene, which was keen to experiment, to relate the imagery projected into the dome to a specific topic: the compositional ideas of Franz Liszt.

The VisuaLiszt program at the 5th FullDome Festival is organized by the Zeiss Planetarium Jena in cooperation with the Art Association Apolda Avantgarde eV and an accompanying event by the Bauhaus University Weimar (lecturer Micky Remann). Funded by the Thuringian Ministry of Culture.

The "VisualLiszt role" with selected competition entries was performed publicly in the regular program of the Zeiss Planetarium Jena from June 18 to July 3, 2011.

VisuaLiszt - contribution to the Liszt year

With the special program “VisuaLiszt” a bridge has been built from the new medium to the main cultural topic in Thuringia, the work of the European composer Franz Liszt.

Award winner 2011

Winner of the VisuaLiszt and FullDome Awards, donated by Carl Zeiss: As part of the Franz Liszt Year 2011, prize money of 7,500 euros from the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, the Impulse Region and Apolda Avantgarde eV could be awarded “ VisuaLiszt Awards ”. This is how the jury decided:

1st prize (3,000.00) for “Liszt from Space” by Stefan Berke and Jan Zehn, Ten Art Communications, Jena. (Independent artist / media producer). 2. Prize (2.000.-) for “How to disappear” by Merlin Flügel, Offenbach University of Design. (Student production). 3rd prize (1,000.00) for "The Metalliszt - Road to Victory", by Robert Sawallisch, Samuel Klemke and Hannes Wagner, Bauhaus University Weimar. (Student production).

The more than 30 entries for the VisuaLiszt Award were assessed by the jury members under the aspect of artistic and technical quality as well as their specific effect in the 360-degree dome room. Particular consideration was given to approaches with successful relationships between music and image to one another and in space. The medium FullDome is ideally suited for the development of synaesthetic perception. The roots of such innovative formats can be traced back to Liszt's symphonic poems and the concept of the total work of art designed with Richard Wagner.

  • Creative Award - outstanding idea (500.-) for “The Royal Pea” by Helena Doyle and Rob Bidder, University of Westminster, London.

6th FullDome Festival 2012

From 8 to 12 May 2012, 90 different shows, short films and clips, including 29 student works, were shown and rated. With contributions and guests from 18 countries, the FullDome Festival was once again able to prove its status as the largest international festival of its kind. Eleven of the sixteen awards went to German students and producers, which is not only due to the German hosts, but also testifies to the high level of media competence in Germany. Of the five universities with student submissions, the Offenbach University of Design came off best. According to the jury's decision, seven of the eight Offenbach works made it to the final round of the “finalists”.

A valued tradition is the support of Carl Zeiss AG, which donated three student prizes worth 500 euros each. An independent jury made up of seven experts selected the winners of the Creative Awards and the Performance Awards.

7th FullDome Festival 2013

7th FullDome Festival Certificate of Sponsorship

As part of the 7th FullDome Festival from May 29 to June 1, 2013, 80 new productions - 24 fulldome shows, 26 short films and 30 student works - were shown with participants from 17 countries. With more than a thousand visitors from home and abroad, there was unbroken interest in the fulldome medium. The doubling of the number of participating universities with student submissions is gratifying. The fulldome show "Dream to Fly" had its world premiere at the festival. The Polish production about the history of the flight also convinced the festival directors (Directors Award).

Thanks to a crowd funding campaign initiated by the festival, numerous sponsors could be won for the festival. This enabled the prize money for the best submissions to be increased significantly. All main sponsors received a star on the “Walk of Fame” in the Zeiss Planetarium Jena and a corresponding certificate. Another novelty of the festival was the first award of the »JANUS«, a statue based on other international prizes in the film industry. Janus is the double-faced Roman god of the beginning and the end and like no other figure suitable to symbolize the space-filling projection onto the dome. The festival directors presented nine of these trophies for the best fulldome contributions to the festival gala.

A special feature of the Jena planetarium is the possibility of generating a spatial sound based on wave field synthesis. Six contributions dealt for the first time with the acoustic possibilities of the »spatial sound wave system«. The best works were awarded (Spatial Sound Award). In 2013, the winners were again determined by an independent international jury made up of seven media experts.
