The Gäsbock mountain bike marathon (also Gäsbockbiker , formerly Geißbock MTB marathon ) is a mountain bike marathon around Lambrecht in the mountain bike park Palatinate Forest .

history

The Gäsbock MTB Marathon has been taking place with an annually changing motto around Lambrecht since 2001 and has already attracted well-known cycling journalists such as Henry Lesewitz as well as cyclists such as Udo Bölts and Karl Platt . The first two marathons in 2001 and 2002 took place in autumn. Since several German marathon races take place in the fall, the organizers switched to an orientation in the spring after an online survey. Since then, the Gäsbock marathon has taken place every Saturday on the second weekend in May. The Palatinate Forest Mountain Bike Park was opened in April 2005 in the area where the Gäsbock Marathon is held, the Palatinate Forest Nature Park and Biosphere Reserve . In 2016, the 16th Gäsbock mountain bike marathon with around 600 participants took place under the motto Sweet Little Sixteen .

The 20th edition of the mountain bike marathon was originally supposed to take place on May 9, 2020 under the motto Gäsbock 20 - Wääschd noch? occur. Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic and the rapidly increasing COVID-19 pandemic in Germany , the mountain bike marathon had to be postponed indefinitely in a message from the organizer on March 16, 2020.

Profile and characteristics

The Gäsbock marathon is known far beyond the borders of the Palatinate for its demanding routes, the final "dirt rise" and the extraordinary refreshment stations and, according to Bike-Magazin 5/2012, is one of the ten weirdest MTB events you can take part in should, established. Right at the start, the “Singing Pastor of Lambrecht” surprises the participants with his guitar , songs he wrote himself and wishes for blessings for the route. Even at the refreshment stations of the Gäsbock marathon, the usual energy bars for mountain bike races are not provided, but extraordinary surprises such as steamed noodles with vanilla sauce , grilled Palatinate sausage and special refreshments with fresh waffles , yeast plaits with Nutella , coffee and cake or beer and sausage . In addition, there are annual, theme-related surprise stations such as an "Kaisergarten" with currywurst and Kölsch (2013, under the motto Gäsbock and the wild 13 ), a "Rock 'n' Roll station" (2014, under the motto Gäsbock 14 rocks ! ), a "disco station" with a glitter ball, dry ice fog and the corresponding sound (2015, under the motto Love, Peace and Happy Trails! ) or a "Chamber of Secrets" tattoo studio station (2016, under the motto Sweet Little Sixteen ) . In the 5/2016 bike magazine, the Gäsbock Marathon was named first among the ten cult marathons .

The marathon takes place on a shorter lap (about 60 kilometers) and a longer lap (about 80 kilometers, with an extra loop on the shorter route). In recent years there have been three to four different circuits with the longest routes exceeding 100 kilometers. The start is in blocks of 100 starters at an interval of three minutes in order to equalize the field of participants. The start takes place at the monastery church in Lambrecht. There is no timekeeping.

Among the approximately 600 annual participants there are not only many athletes from all over Germany, but also more and more mountain bikers from neighboring European countries. Participants must be at least 16 years of age. The competition takes place on a circuit around Lambrecht so that the spectators can see the athletes several times and cheer them on.

    At our work and planning meeting on Friday, March 13th, 2020 we made the decision that there will be no Gäbock MTB marathon in Lambrecht on May 9th, 2020. Against the background of the rapidly spreading corona infection and the absolutely sensible measures aimed at slowing the spread of the virus, our event cannot take place.

    Since we are all becoming smarter every day with regard to the course of the infection and have no experience of how the development will look in concrete terms, we consciously refrain from giving an appointment. Due to the current situation, we cannot say when this new date will be and we ask for your understanding.

    We want to keep the registrations of the participants as valid. Upon request, we will refund the entry fee.

    The first round of orders for the 2020 jersey "Wääschd noch?" we will carry out and process completely.
