The first issue of BIKE (01/89) appeared on May 4, 1989. The founder and then editor-in-chief Ulrich Stanciu brought out three more issues in the same year. Stanciu, now publisher of the magazine, is considered a pioneer of the mountain bike movement in Germany . The focus of the first edition was a bike test at the Tremalzo Pass in the north of Lake Garda . Within three years the circulation of BIKE increased to over 100,000 copies.

The number of copies sold has fallen by 43.4 percent since 1998. It is currently 49,275 copies. This corresponds to a decrease of 37,814 units. The share of subscriptions in the circulation sold is 51.8 percent.

Product range

In addition to the monthly issues of BIKE , the Delius Klasing Verlag publishes a number of special issues that appear under the BIKE brand . For example the BIKE Alpen Guide , the BIKE Fitness Guide or the BIKE Workshop . The Alpine Guide contains descriptions of the areas and tours from different areas of the Alps . The Fitness Guide deals with all sporting topics to do with cycling - mainly training, nutrition and health. The BIKE Workshop is the largest mountain bike market overview in the German-speaking area. The workshop includes around 3500 mountain bikes, components , accessories and clothing with prices, technical data and sales addresses . These special issues appear once a year. Since 2005 the magazine FREERIDE has been published alongside BIKE .

An online offer has existed since 1999. It publishes tips and information on the subjects of travel and tours, tests, videos, workshop series, nutrition , fitness and training .

Events

BIKE is also active as an organizer in the mountain bike sector. The Bike Festival Garda Trentino on Lake Garda had 4,000 visitors when it was first held in 1994. Since then the number has risen to 45,000 and around 170 exhibitors are represented. In 1998 the Willingen Bike Festival took place for the first time . Today the festival takes place with 35,000 visitors and 130 exhibitors. BIKE has also hosted the Saalfelden Leogang Bike Festival since 2018 . The most famous BIKE event is the Bike Transalp . The stage race , which celebrated its premiere in 1998, leads across the Alps in teams of two .

Awards

BIKE has been awarding the BIKE milestone once a year since 2008 . This prize is intended to honor companies from the mountain bike industry for innovative and pioneering products . For this purpose , the editorial team nominates three products in each of the three categories of complete bike / frame set, components and accessories. The BIKE readers then decide on the award of the milestone in an online vote . The BIKE milestones are awarded annually at the Eurobike exhibition in Friedrichshafen .
