Göbel Schickenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Göbel Schickenberges or Gobel van Collen called . Brother Göbel (* probably in Cologne ) was a lay brother of the Augustinian canons of Böddeken in the 16th century and author of a chronicle.

Live and act

Göbel joined the Böddeken monastery around 1501. Just one year later he was its governor . As such, he was responsible, among other things, for collecting the taxes from the dependent farmers and for the corresponding bookkeeping. In addition, the monastery often used him for special assignments. On behalf of the community, he traveled to Cologne , Deventer , Göttingen , Braunschweig , Lübeck and Rome, among others .

His notes and reports have been preserved from the period between 1502 and 1543. Göbel wrote mostly in Middle Low German . He seldom used Latin.

He reported on everyday and extraordinary events in his vicinity, but he also made comments on general world events. This shows how the Turkish wars or events in France were perceived in Westphalia . He also reported on his travels. Last but not least, his records of prices and merchandise are a remarkable source of regional economic history . The reports from the monastery life also give important information for the self-image especially of the lay brothers. The effects of the Reformation on the Prince Diocese of Paderborn are also an issue of Göbel.

The chronicle of Göbel was edited over decades by the Bielefeld medievalist Heinrich Rüthing .
