Heinrich Rüthing

Heinrich Rüthing (born August 5, 1937 in Paderborn ; † July 26, 2017 in Bielefeld ) was a German historian .

life and work

The son of a primary school teacher studied in Münster, Göttingen and Erlangen. At the University of Erlangen he received his doctorate in 1965 under Arno Borst with a thesis on the Carthusian Heinrich von Kalkar (1328-1403). From 1972 he worked at Bielefeld University. First he was assistant to Kaspar Elm and from 1975 academic senior councilor. In 2002 he retired.

He completed his habilitation in 1985 with a thesis on the city of Höxter around 1500. This work is considered a work of paradigmatic rank in city history research. His main research areas were medieval, town, monastery and regional history of the Paderborn Monastery and East Westphalia. He worked closely with the regional archives and historical associations.

Rüthing was a member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia (full member 1986 to 2012, then corresponding member), the Antiquities Commission for Westphalia and the Association for the History and Antiquity of Westphalia, Department Paderborn . In 2012 he received the sponsorship award for Westphalian regional studies , which is awarded annually by the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe .
