The 1971/72 season was the 41st season of the Finnish SM-sarja . Champion was for the 15th time in the club's history Ilves Tampere . Lukko Rauma , Karhu-Kissat and JoKP Joensuu were relegated to the 2nd division.

In the main round, each of the twelve teams played a total of 22 games. The six best-placed teams in the main round qualified for the final round, in which the champions were played out. The remaining six teams had to compete in a relegation round to avoid relegation, with the last three placed in the relegation round relegated to the second division. The results from the main round were carried over to the final or relegation round. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
