Gültekin Oransay

Gültekin Oransay (born September 9, 1930 in Berlin ; † November 20, 1989 in İzmir ) was a Turkish musicologist, historian and linguist. He was a professor and vice dean at the Aegean University in Izmir.

biography

Gültekin Oransay spent his childhood in Germany because his father Bekir Sıtkı Oransay studied in Germany. Together with his mother Keriman (Karina) Oransay, the whole young family returned to Turkey in 1932. Oransay graduated from middle school and high school at Ankara College. During his studies at the Faculty of Language, History and Geography in Ankara, his passion for music dominated and he began studying composition at the Ankara State Conservatory in 1950. After completing his studies, he went to Germany. He received his doctorate in musicology from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Munich in 1962.

After his return to Turkey he became director and specialist teacher at the State Conservatory in Ankara, headed the foreign language service of the broadcasting company in Ankara and became general director and department head for fine arts in the Ministry of Education. During this time he researched Turkish traditional music in the Kars and Gaziantep regions on compilation tours . Oransay became a lecturer and associate professor at Ankara University in 1971 . There he became the head of the theological faculty .

In 1976 he moved to Izmir , where he founded the Musicology Department at the Aegean University in the Faculty of Fine Arts. In 1978 he became a full professor and also served as vice dean at the same school. In 1989 he died of a heart attack .

Oransay was known for his passion for reading books as well as for his extensive cross-disciplinary general knowledge. Oransay published publications on polyphonic music as well as musicological research on Turkish traditional music. He spoke German , English , Arabic , Persian and Ottoman Turkish . He also made translations, for example Osmanoğulları (Mehmed Sureyyas Sicill-i Osmanisi) . After Oransay's death, his family donated his extensive private library to Bilkent University Ankara and the Faculty of Musicology at Dokuz Eylül University of Fine Arts in Izmir.
