Günter Biemer

Günter Biemer (born September 30, 1929 in Mannheim ; † June 1, 2019 in Staufen ) was the founder and honorary chairman of the German John Henry Newman Society. He was a professor emeritus for religious education at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau .

After studying theology in Freiburg im Breisgau , Birmingham (Oscott College) and Tübingen , he was ordained a priest in 1955. After his fundamental theological doctorate on "Scripture and Tradition according to John Henry Newman" (1959 in Munich with Heinrich Fries ) and his habilitation (1967), he held the chair for religious education in Freiburg from 1970 to 1994. Visiting professorships in Pittsburgh (1964), Bristol (1982) and Philadelphia (1992); 1977–1982 research project “Learning Process Christians Jews”; Publications on church youth work and the catechetics of the sacraments; Founder and honorary chairman of the International German John Henry Newman Society and Président d'honneur de l'association française des amis de JH Newman.
