During his time in Mannheim, he also completed his habilitation in clinical psychology at the University of Heidelberg in 1990. Of central importance for his academic career is the conception of the Mannheim longitudinal studies together with Martin H. Schmidt , which since 1978 has been one of the most important child psychology studies both nationally and internationally belong. The Mannheim Kurpfalz Survey and the Mannheim Risk Children Study are of outstanding importance for epidemiological and developmental psychopathological research, so that by 2010 they had already produced a three-digit number of peer-reviewed publications.

In addition to his university teaching activities in the psychology degree course and in teacher training for the state of Brandenburg, he works at the API as a supervisor and leads a large number of theory seminars for prospective child and adolescent psychotherapists. The textbook on clinical psychology and psychotherapy of children and adolescents published by him, the third edition of which was published in 2008, has formed the basis for theoretical events during studies and in psychotherapy training. Within the university self-administration, Günter Esser took over the chairmanship of the ethics committee of the University of Potsdam in 2007 after two terms as managing director of the institute for psychology and many years of work on the faculty council, to which he had been a member for many years.
