Martin H. Schmidt

Martin H. Schmidt (born December 23, 1937 in Bautzen ) is a German psychiatrist , psychotherapist and author . He is a retired university professor .

Life

Martin H. Schmidt studied medicine and psychology at the University of Cologne and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . In 1964 he passed the exams in both subjects, obtained his doctorate in medicine (Dr. med.) In 1965 and a doctorate in natural sciences (Dr. rer. Nat.) In 1970 . From 1968 to 1972 Schmidt completed his training as a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy at the University Hospital Cologne and the University Hospital Frankfurt am Main . In 1974 he completed his habilitation and followed the call of the Medical Faculty Mannheim of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg to the professorship for child and adolescent psychiatry. On September 1, 1975 he became the medical director of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinic at the Central Institute for Mental Health . Although he was appointed by the universities of Cologne, Zurich, Berlin and Frankfurt am Main, Schmidt held the chair at Heidelberg University until his retirement in 2006, in recent years as deputy director of the Central Institute for Mental Health.

Services

Martin H. Schmidt set up “one of the most successful child and adolescent psychiatric research departments” at the Central Institute for Mental Health in Mannheim. "The high scientific reputation meant that Martin Schmidt was appointed to a large number of committees," he was the spokesman for various special research areas and chairman of professional associations. In 1998 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
