Günter Kelbg (born March 26, 1922 in Königsberg (Prussia) , † January 26, 1988 in Rostock ) was a German theoretical physicist.

Live and act

After graduating from high school, Günter Kelbg studied mathematics, physics and chemistry at the University of Königsberg from 1942 to 1943 . From 1943 he did his military service in the German armed forces and in 1945 he was taken prisoner by the French .

From 1948 to 1951 he studied mathematics and physics at the University of Rostock . Then he was a research assistant. In 1954 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the theory of strong electrolytes . His scientific teacher was Hans Falkenhagen . After his habilitation in 1959, also with a thesis on electrolyte theory, he became a lecturer and in 1961 professor for theoretical physics. From 1964 to 1968 he was acting institute director and from 1968 to 1974 director of the physics section of the University of Rostock. In 1987 he retired.

Günter Kelbg's main area of work was the application of methods of statistical mechanics to many-body systems with Coulomb interaction , especially to electrolytic solutions and quantum plasmas. The term “Kelbg potential” has entered the specialist literature.

Günter Kelbg became a corresponding member of the GDR Academy of Sciences in 1970 and a full member in 1972 . On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the University of Rostock, he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit (VVO) in bronze in 1969. In 1987 he received the VVO in silver.
