Günter Schuster

Günter Schuster (born December 17, 1918 in Alfter / Gielsdorf ; † August 8, 2011 in Bonn ) was a German physicist and science functionary.

Life

Schuster studied physics and graduated in 1948. In 1949 he was with the work Magnetic and electrical tests on sintered Carbonylnickelstäben at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn to Dr. rer. nat. PhD. He was a scientific assistant at the Institute for Radiation and Nuclear Physics in Bonn (1948/59) and at the Institute for Applied Physics in the Collaborative Research Center for Molecular Radiation Research (1950/55). Schuster has been teaching physics at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium Bonn (EMA) in Bonn since 1949 , where he himself graduated from high school in 1937. From 1956 to 1965 he was headmaster of the EMA. He taught "Didactics of Physics" at the University of Bonn and was a textbook author and co-editor of the teaching guidelines for North Rhine-Westphalia at the time.

In 1965 he worked as a ministerial advisor for the Federal Ministry for Scientific Research and took over the department for fundamental questions and in 1966 the reactor department. From 1968 to 1971 he was Head of the Nuclear Research and Nuclear Technology subdivision in the Federal Ministry of Education and Science .

In 1971 he moved to the Commission of the European Communities and until 1973 was Deputy Director General for Business, Technology and Science. In 1973 he became Director General of the Directorate General for Research, Science and Education (DG XII) of the Commission of the European Communities and built up his own education department, which was created under the responsible Commissioner Ralf Dahrendorf . From 1984 to 1987 he held an advisory mandate for the Berlin Senate .

For his commitment he was honored in 1983 with the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . In 1990 he was appointed officer of the French National Order of Merit " Ordre national du Mérite ". He was an honorary member of the German Action Group on Education-Invention-Innovation (DABEI). He was a member of the Bergedorf Round Table of the Körber Foundation .
