Günter Spruch (born April 26, 1908 in Beuthen , † September 6, 1985 in Bad Harzburg ) was a German politician ( SPD ). He was the district mayor of Berlin-Charlottenburg .

Life

Spruch attended higher secondary school and then studied law and economics at the Universities of Breslau and Geneva . Spruch was a member of the Socialist Workers' Youth and joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in 1926. Between 1928 and 1933 he was an active member of the Socialist Student Union and the Young Socialists in Breslau. In 1931 he switched to the Socialist Workers' Party of Germany (SAP). In October 1933 he passed the first state examination in law and was then a trainee lawyer .

After the National Socialists ' seizure of power ' in 1933, Spruch took part in the SAP resistance struggle. On April 22, 1935, he was arrested and, since nothing could be proven, sentenced to only six months in prison in a trial against members of the SAP. Spruch had to do military service as a soldier between 1940 and 1945 .

After the end of the war he became a member of the SPD again in 1945. From May 1946 he was a legal department head at the Berlin Reichsbahn . In 1948 he was one of the founders of the Independent Trade Union Opposition . After participating in a railroad strike against the management of the Reichsbahn, he was dismissed in 1949. Then he was legal counsel at the Berlin Senate . In 1953 he was appointed to the senior government council.

From 1959 to 1961 he was chairman of the SPD sub-district of Charlottenburg and a member of the state committee of the SPD. From 1964 to 1971 he was mayor of the Berlin district of Charlottenburg. From 1970 to 1975 he was chairman of the Working Group of Persecuted Social Democrats in Berlin.
