Günter Stein (art historian)

Günter Stein (born February 14, 1924 in Berlin , † November 19, 2000 in Karlsruhe ) was a German art historian and a connoisseur of Upper Rhine building history.

Life

After a construction internship and apprenticeship as a bricklayer in Coburg and Berlin, Stein studied art history, classical archeology and history at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1946 . There he was in 1950 with the dissertation studies the German castle building the Romanesque period a doctorate and then worked as a research assistant at the Archaeological Institute in Berlin. For this he undertook, among other things, building surveys and excavations in the Spandau Citadel before he worked in various cities on behalf of the institute and the Koldewey Society . In 1962 he moved to the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer . For this he was involved in excavations in the medieval Judenhof Speyer from 1965 to 1968 . At the same time he was responsible for medieval art and cultural history in the museum and began to expand the Jewish department in a targeted and sustainable manner. In 1969 he published the Judaica collection that had been created by then. Appointed chief curator of the museum in 1977, Stein was most recently its deputy director.

From 1975 Günter Stein held a teaching position for Upper Rhine building history at the Technical University of Karlsruhe and in 1980 he became an honorary professor at the Institute for Building History there .

In addition to his professional activity, Stein had been a member of the State Historical Association for the Mark Brandenburg since 1951 and its secretary from 1952 to 1960. In 1971 he received the Fontane plaque from this association.
