Günter Volmer

Günter Volmer (born July 17, 1922 in Gelsenkirchen ; † July 30, 2010 ) was a German engineer , trade unionist and politician ( CDU ).

Life and work

Volmer was born the son of a foreman. After attending primary school in Gelsenkirchen, he first completed an industrial apprenticeship as a laboratory assistant, which he completed with an assistant test. He then took up studies at the State Engineering School in Essen , which he completed with the examination to become a qualified engineer (FH / specialization in chemistry). He was initially employed as an assistant and from 1948 worked as an engineer at the chemical investigation office of the city of Essen.

In addition to his professional activity, Volmer was involved in church work and in the trade union movement. From 1959 to 1969 he worked as an editor for the members ' newspaper Kreuz und Hammer of the Catholic Workers' Movement (KAB) in the diocese of Essen and in 1966 served as Vice President of the 81st German Catholic Convention in Bamberg . As a co-founder, he was federal chairman of the Christian Trade Union Confederation from 1973 to 1986 . He was then elected honorary chairman of the union.

He died on July 30, 2010 at the age of 88.

Political party

Volmer was involved in the Catholic youth movement from 1930 to 1947 , joined the Junge Union in 1946 and joined the CDU in 1950. From 1968 to 1983 he was chairman of the Gelsenkirchen CDU district association and was then elected honorary chairman. From 1976 to 1986 he was a member of the Federal Board of the Christian Democratic Workers' Union (CDA).

Volmer was from 1952 to 1989 council member of the city of Gelsenkirchen and from 1963 to 1989 chairman of the CDU parliamentary group. From 1966 to 1969 he was a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament . He was a member of the German Bundestag from 1969 to 1983. From 1980 to 1983 he was deputy chairman of the interior committee. In all four electoral terms he was drawn into parliament via the state list of the CDU North Rhine-Westphalia .

Others

His son Ludger Volmer was later also a member of the Bundestag.
