Günther Drosdowski

Günther Drosdowski (born October 15, 1926 in Osterode in East Prussia ; † December 3, 2000 ) was a German specialist in German .

Life

After returning from World War II , Drosdowski studied German , English , Nordic , Indo-European and general linguistics from 1946–48 at the University of Rostock and from 1948–50 at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1950 he did his doctorate on the "History of the meaning of Anglo-Saxon concepts of time". 1950–53 he was an assistant at the Humboldt University, 1953–1961 at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . After the construction of the Berlin Wall , he moved to the Duden editorial team of the Bibliographical Institute in Mannheim , which he headed from 1973 to 1995.

In 1984 Drosdowski was awarded the title of professor by the state of Baden-Württemberg, and in 1995 he received an honorary doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Zurich . Since 1979 he has been a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry .
