Günther Gaßmann

Günther Gaßmann (also Gassmann; born August 15, 1931 in Frankenhausen ; † January 11, 2017 in Tutzing ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian .

Life

Günther Gassmann was due to one of Edmund Schlink excited dissertation on the historic episcopate and the unity of the Church in the modern Anglican theology in 1962 to Dr. theol. PhD . From 1959 to 1969 he worked as a director of studies at the Ecumenical Institute of Heidelberg University, where he completed his habilitation in 1972 ( Concepts of Unity in the Movement for Faith and Order ). In 1969 he became a research professor at the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg ( Center d'études œcuméniques de Strasbourg ); In 1976 he moved to Hanover as head of the church office of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany (VELKD) . After two years as deputy director of the Lutheran World Federation's studies department in Geneva, he became director of the WCC Faith and Order Commission in 1984 . After his retirement in 1995 he took on visiting professorships in the United States (Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg), Estonia, Latvia and Slovakia.

Gassmann was particularly committed to the ecumenical dialogue of the Lutheran World Federation.

The painter Jacques Gassmann is his son.
