life and work

Günther Rötter studied school music , educational science and philosophy in Detmold and Paderborn as well as musicology, psychology and philosophy at the Technical University in Berlin . There he did his doctorate in 1985 with Helga de la Motte-Haber on the subject: The ability to influence the emotional experience of music through analytical listening. From 1989 to 1994 he was a research assistant at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . After a professorship at the Vechta University of Applied Sciences and his habilitation in 1996 , Günther Rötter received a professorship for musicology at the Technical University of Dortmund . Rötter's research focus is music psychology. In empirical studies, he often devotes himself to everyday topics such as music at the dentist's or listening to music in the car. In doing so, he refuted unchecked assumptions, such as that listening to music while doing homework distracts students or that music in the department store increases the willingness to buy.

Rötter is (co-) editor of lexicons and handbooks in the field of systematic musicology .
