Günther Rager

Günther Rager (born May 11, 1943 in Sankt Mang (today a district of Kempten (Allgäu )) is a German newspaper researcher. Until January 2010 he was Professor of Journalism at the Institute for Journalism at the University of Dortmund (today TU Dortmund University ) and is a co-founder of a consulting company.

Life

Rager studied German, history and empirical cultural studies in Munich and Tübingen. He first worked as a television journalist. From 1973 he built up the communication science course at the University of Stuttgart-Hohenheim . On behalf of the Association of Southwest German Newspaper Publishers and the German Association of Journalists, he set up a volunteer training facility in Stuttgart (today Journalist Academy eV). From 1984 to 2010 he researched and taught as a professor for journalistic production and journalism research at the Institute for Journalism at the University of Dortmund (today TU Dortmund ). There he did research mainly on the reception of radio, print and online media, on production conditions in journalism and on the readership of daily newspapers with a focus on young readers and non-readers. He headed the DFG research projects "Reading Socialization: Learning to Read Newspapers" and "Theatricality and Argumentativity in the Media Society" (with Thomas Meyer ). He was a member of the Grimme Prize jury for many years .

In 2005 he received an honorary professorship in the Faculty of Journalism at Lomonosov University in Moscow. In 1993 he founded mct media consulting team GmbH in Dortmund with Bernd Weber, which he leads as a partner. mct develops kindergarten, school and trainee projects for newspaper publishers, conducts readership research and offers seminars and advice. For example, in 2018 he appeared next to Sabine Schiffer and Daniele Ganser at an IALANA media-critical conference .

Rager is married, has two children and lives in Dortmund .
