The G. Lufft measuring and control engineering GmbH is a company in the field of meteorological instrumentation headquartered in Fellbach near Stuttgart. It manufactures devices for measuring air pressure , temperature and relative humidity . In addition, devices for industrial climate measurement technology, traffic technology , agricultural meteorology , environmental technology and for monitoring production processes in the pharmaceutical industry are produced.

history

The optician Gotthilf Lufft (1848–1921), former assistant at the Polytechnic Stuttgart , took over the optics business SF Trostel (Samuel Friedrich Trostel (1794–1873)) in 1872 , which was already known as Waldstein & Trostel before 1838 , where he manufactured thermometers and aneroid jars . At the time, these metal barometers were imported from France as there was no German manufacturer. In 1881 he founded the company Mech. Werkstatt G. Lufft , making it the first German manufacturer of barometers. Lufft further developed the aneroid barometer and applied for a patent for its products in 1909 . The famous Bézard compasses were also produced from 1910 to 1996 . During World War I , due to a lack of demand for barometers, the company switched production to aircraft altimeters , which were based on the same technology. After the end of the war, barometers were manufactured again and the production of altimeters was discontinued.

After Gotthilf Lufft's death, his son-in-law Richard Müller-Lufft continued the company together with the authorized signatory Friedrich Wilhelm Flor. In 1932, the production of bimetal thermometers began , which were less fragile and easier to read than conventional mercury devices. During the Second World War , products for the armaments industry took the place of civilian products again. After a short transition phase, Müller-Lufft's son Erich moved to the top of the company in 1945. The production was switched to weather stations for private households, large wall barometers and meteorological measuring devices for industrial customers. When Erich Müller-Lufft sen. 1970 died, his son Erich jun. the management. In the 1960s and 1970s, the company was exposed to increased competitive pressure from competitors who gained market share with lower prices and more modern electronic technology. In 1990 Lufft presented its first electronic measuring device. Currently 90 percent of sales come from electronics products. More than 50 percent of the proceeds are generated in exports, with Western Europe accounting for the main share, which is mainly concentrated in the countries of Spain and Austria . Most exports outside of Europe go to the USA , but also to Asia .

In January 2016, Lufft approved the takeover by Ott Hydromet , based in Kempten, Germany. Through the merger of six independent companies (OTT, Hydrolab, ADCON Telemetry, Sutron, Lufft and - since January 8, 2018 - Kipp & Zonen), the OTT Hydromet Group covers the areas of water quality, water quantity, telemetry and meteorology.
