Gabriel Elorde (born March 25, 1935 in Bogo City , Cebu Island , † January 2, 1985 ), known as a boxer under the name Flash Elorde , was a Filipino boxer .

career

Defensive southpaw Elorde began his career in his home country in 1951 at the age of 16. He mainly fought in the super featherweight division, which was not particularly respected at the time. In 1955 he won in the Philippines in a non-title fight against the American featherweight legend Sandy Saddler on points. He lost the rematch on January 18, 1956 for the world featherweight title in the United States just behind after a break in the thirteenth round due to a laceration.

It was not until March 16, 1960 that he won the super featherweight championship against the American Harold Gomes by knocking out in round seven. Elorde held the title for more than seven years and made ten successful title defenses, although he never again beat an opponent of the Saddler class. In the lightweight (one class higher) he was defeated twice in world championship fights Carlos Ortiz during this time . He finally lost the title on June 15, 1967 to the Japanese Yoshiaki Numata . He ended his career in 1971.

Chain smoker Elorde died of lung cancer at the age of only 49. He was one of the few Asians to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame . From the " Ring Magazine ", he was the second best of all time by Filipinos Pancho Villa classified, Manny Pacquiao had not been considered.
