World champion Argentina started the opening game of the World Cup against Belgium with its 21-year-old superstar Diego Maradona and many praise. The deserved 1-0 defeat was pure disillusionment, but not the end of the favorite. Already against Hungary in the second game the gauchos got going. The 2-0 win against the blatant outsider El Salvador was more worrying again. But the Belgians did not uproot trees either. 1-0 against El Salvador, which the Hungarians lost in the first game 1:10 (!). Against the Magyars, goalkeeper Jean-Marie Pfaff & Co. managed a 1: 1 that was only secured late. But that was enough to win the second group ahead of Argentina.

Argentina initially met Italy in the second final round . In a very tough game, Argentina lost 2-1. Playmaker Maradona was covered by the uncompromising Claudio Gentile , but had no luck with the referee performance: Gentile knocked him down with a punch and only saw yellow. Maradona also set a free kick to the crossbar. Pasarella's late goal in the 83rd minute could not change the defeat. Argentina barely had a chance against tournament favorites Brazil and lost 3-1. Maradona had lost her nerve and kicked his opponent Batista in the stomach far from the ball and saw red. The subsequent goal fell in the 89th minute and couldn't turn the game around.
