Lavardac is a municipality with 2260 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in France in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .
geography
The city lies on the banks of the Baïse River , at the confluence of its left tributary, the Gélise . Lavardac is located in the Buzet wine region .
history
- In Gallo-Roman times there was a Roman military camp here on the Ténarèze , a road between the Garonne and the Pyrenees .
- Lavardac was founded in 1268 as a bastide by Alfonso of Poitiers .
- Ruled successively by French and English barons, Lavardac was besieged and devastated by the Duke of Mayenne during the Wars of Religion in 1621 .
- Due to the flourishing harbor Lavardac was from 15th to 19th Century seat of the shipping companies on the Baïse, which ensured the transport of goods to Bordeaux .
