Moncrabeau is a municipality with 733 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in France in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

geography

The city is located on a hill above the Baïse river , a left tributary of the Garonne . Just south of Moncrabeau is the border with the neighboring Gers department .

history

Moncrabeau has always been an agricultural center, where the famous delicacies of Gascony were produced ( prunes , foie gras , goat cheese , Armagnac ). Later, mostly peppermint was cultivated until the peppermint louse put an end to this monoculture . The inhabitants were referred to as “mentheurs” (peppermint farmers). As this term also in French but "liar" (Menteur), and was often used with great enthusiasm by the other ambiguous, you have made a virtue out of necessity and in the year 1748 by the citizens of this town, the Academy of liars founded . Since then, Moncrabeau has been considered the world capital of liars and holds annual lies competitions on the 1st Sunday in August.
