Saumont is a French commune of 256 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the community association Communauté de communes des Coteaux de l'Albret . The inhabitants are called Saumonais (es).

geography

Saumont is located on the D15 département road , 15 km southwest of Agen and 8.1 km east of Nérac in the Auvignon valley , an orographic left tributary of the Garonne . The area around Saumont is called the Pays d'Albret .

history

In the 14th century the Saumont fief belonged to a branch of the Albret family. There are traces of walls from the 16th century on several houses. On the cadastre of 1818 there were two districts of Saumont, one was by the castle and was destroyed and rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century.

Attractions

  • The Château de Saumont was built around 1654 on the ruins of an older building for Marie-Claire de Mauléon and her husband François de Tersac, seigneur de Montberault. In 1807 it was sold. In the 1830s ten Métairies (about Meierhöfe ), two water mills and a windmill were attached to the castle. The castle was renovated in 1888. In 1956, the Petits Frères des Pauvres (Little Brothers of the Poor) humanitarian association bought the castle and turned it into a home for the elderly .

economy

Main occupations in Saumont are agriculture, viticulture , melon and tomato cultivation. The municipality is located in the Côtes-du-brulhois (AOVDQS) wine-growing region . AOVDQS means Appellation d'origine vin délimité de qualité supérieure , "higher quality wines from a limited growing area".
