Buzet-sur-Baïse is a municipality with 1284 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in France in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the canton of Lavardac (until 2015: canton of Damazan ).

geography

Buzet-sur-Baïse is located on the left bank of the Baïse , four kilometers from its confluence with the Garonne . Since the Garonne is not navigable with larger ships, the Canal latéral à la Garonne (Garonne Lateral Canal) was built, which also runs through Buzet.

The municipality extends over three zones:

  • the terrace (where the village is located),
  • the hill (which overlooks the terrace to the west),
  • the plain (the Baïse and Garonne floodplain).

The soils of the terrace and the hill are particularly favorable for viticulture , while fruit , vegetables and cereals are grown on the plain .

history

  • In the Middle Ages , a castle was built on a cliff that dominated the valley of the Bénac stream and the valley of the Baïse. Little by little, market towns developed around the castle.
  • Probably after the end of the French Wars of Religion , the small wine-growing village of Lagravère, which was located on the banks of the Bénac stream, developed more and more, while the market town around the castle was gradually abandoned. The residents built a town hall (1838) and a church with rectory (1858) on the new site, which eventually became Buzet-sur-Baïse.
  • The main source of income for the community was agriculture and especially viticulture . There were several small mills on the Bénac stream, but especially one imposing mill on the Baïse, which belonged to the Count of Flamarens .
  • The construction of the Garonne canal, which opened in 1856, changed the landscape of Buzet a little, but above all it encouraged the development of trade , which was particularly important along the Baïse.

economy

  • River tourism
Since inland shipping no longer has any economic importance in this region, it was discovered for tourism. For this reason, a harbor for sports boats and houseboats was recently built here and inaugurated in 2001.

Attractions

  • Notre-Dame Church, 19th century
  • The castle and fortress of the Lords of Buzet, built on a rock spur, are private and cannot be visited.
  • Double lock from the Garonne Lateral Canal down to the Baïse. Since its construction in 1852, it has allowed the canal to be integrated into the river network of the south-west ( Baïse , Garonne , Lot ) and made Buzet-sur-Baïse a shipping hub.
