José Santiago Santamaría (born August 22, 1952 in San Nicolás de los Arroyos , † July 27, 2013 in Córdoba ) was an Argentine football player . He took part in the 1982 World Cup with the national team of his home country .

Career

Santiago Santamaría began his football career in 1971 with Newell's Old Boys in Rosario . In 1974 he won his first Argentine soccer championship with the Newell's Old Boys, when first place in the Metropolitano competition was occupied with two points ahead of local rivals CA Rosario Central . In the same year Santamaría left Rosario and Argentina and moved to the French first division side Stade Reims , still one of the most successful clubs in the country with six championship titles in France . However, these triumphs of Stade Reims were already a decade ago, the club had its most successful time in the 1950s, when the final of the European Cup was reached twice , where Real Madrid had to admit defeat. Santamaría played for Stade Reims from 1974 to 1979 and achieved the best placement with Reims by finishing fifth in the 1975/76 season . With the Red-Whites he reached the state cup final in 1977 , in which his opening goal was not enough to win the trophy. After Stades positions in the final table got worse from year to year, Santiago Santamaría rose with Stade Reims 1978/79 from Division 1 as bottom of the table with only 17 points after 38 matchdays. Since then, Reims has not become first class again. After relegation Santamaría returned to Argentina to his old club, the Newell's Old Boys. He played for the club until 1985, but could not celebrate a national title win.

National team

Santiago Santamaría made ten appearances for the Argentine national football team between 1980 and 1982 . The defender was national coach César Luis Menotti into the squad for the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain called. Menotti only used him twice as a substitute. In the last group game against El Salvador (2-0) he came on for Gabriel Calderón in the 78th minute, and in the second round match against Brazil (1: 3) for Daniel Bertoni in the 65th minute . His team, however, which had gone into the world championship as the defending champion, failed in the second round and was unable to defend the title.
