Gabriel Liiceanu

Gabriel Liiceanu (born May 23, 1942 in Râmnicu Vâlcea , Romania ) is a Romanian philosopher and writer .

Life

Liiceanu studied philosophy (state examination in 1965) and classical languages (state examination in 1973) in Bucharest . In 1976 he received his doctorate on the subject of "Tragicul. O fenomenologie a limitei şi depăşirii" ("The tragic. A phenomenology of limitation and overtaking"). Between 1965 and 1975 he worked as a researcher at the Institute of Philosophy, from 1975 to 1989 at the Institute of Art History of the Romanian Academy of Sciences. 1982–1984 Liiceanu was a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Liiceanu has been director of the Humanitas publishing house in Bucharest since 1990, professor at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Bucharest since 1992, and president of the Romanian Publishers Association since 1999. He is a close friend of Andrei Pleșu , both were students of Constantin Noica , the Romanian philosopher who founded and directed a kind of elite school in Păltiniș near Sibiu in Romania.

He translated works by Plato , David of Armenia and Martin Heidegger into Romanian.

Liiceanu's thinking was mainly influenced by the philosophy of life and phenomenology. He has developed his own style that combines autobiography and philosophy. His autobiographical work "Jurnalul de la Pāltiniş" ("The Diary of Pāltiniş"), in which he describes the encounters with Noica and his closest students, was a bestseller in communist Romania (around 60,000 copies have been sold to date) and was ins Translated into English, French, Polish and Swedish.
