Gabriel Alonso Suazo Urbina (born August 9, 1997 in Santiago de Chile ) is a Chilean football player who is currently under contract with the first division club CSD Colo-Colo . The midfielder is also a Chilean international .

Club career

CSD Colo-Colo

Gabriel Suazo comes from the youth academy of the Chilean record champions CSD Colo-Colo , which is considered to be one of the best in the country and from which players like Matías Fernández , Jorge Valdivia and Arturo Vidal also achieved international breakthroughs in the recent past . There the midfielder went through various junior teams and managed to convince there.

For the 2015/16 season , he signed his first professional contract at the age of 18 and was promoted to the first team under coach José Luis Sierra . He made his debut in the first competitive game in the 3-1 cup win against Deportes Concepción when he came on for Jaime Valdés in the 88th minute . He had to wait until October 18, 2015 (9th matchday of the Apertura) for his debut in the league . In the 1-0 defeat at the Estadio Monumental at home , he was on the pitch from the start of the game. In the Apertura 2015 he played two missions, which his club won with one point ahead of the runner-up CD Universidad Católica . He made his debut in El clásico del fútbol chileno , the infamous city derby between Colo-Colo and the CF Universidad de Chile , on March 20, 2016. However, he only made two short appearances in the 2016 Clausura. His club finished this time in second place in the table one point behind the champions Universidad Católica.

In the following season 2016/17, Suazo was used more often. In the Apertura 2016 he played eight games, five of which he was on the field from the start. Colo-Colo only reached 5th place in the table, but was able to compensate for the weak performance in the league by winning the Copa Chile . At the beginning of 2017, Suazo extended his working paper at Colo-Colo until December 2021. In qualifying for the Copa Libertadores 2017 , they failed in the 2nd round at the Brazilian club Botafogo FR . On February 12, 2017 (2nd matchday of Clausura), he scored his first goal in the Los Albos jersey in a 4-0 home win against Audax Italiano . In the 15 games of the Clausura 2017 he played eleven of them and was used in all of them from the start. With his club, however, he had to admit defeat to bitter city rivals Universidad de Chile in the battle for the championship.

The opening game of the Transición 2017 - the transition season due to the change to the annual season - against CD Antofagasta began for Suazo with his first red card in his professional career. Except for his failure due to the suspension, he was used in all other games and was an important part of his club winning the championship.

In the 2018 season, Suazo was gradually pushed out of the starting line-up and appeared in just 19 out of 30 games. The playing time was not satisfactory for his club either and in the end, far from the race for the championship, they had to be content with 5th place in the table. In the Copa Libertadores 2018 , they failed in the quarter-finals due to Palmeiras São Paulo , but made it to the final round as the only Chilean team.

In the following season, 2019, he regained his place in the starting line-up in midfield. He scored only his second goal in his professional career on April 13 (8th matchday) in a 3-2 home win against CD O'Higgins . He ended the season with three goals and four assists in 23 league games.

National team

From August 2016 to January 2017, Suazo played eight games for the Chilean U-20 national team , with which he also took part in the 2017 U-20 South American Championship in Ecuador . After four group games, in which Suazo only missed one due to a yellow card suspension, they had to return home with only two points and last place in the table. This result was the worst since 1985 and the selection under coach Héctor Robles was then referred to by the media as "the worst ever".

In a 3-0 home win in the friendly international match against Burkina Faso , Suazo made his debut for the Chilean national team on June 2, 2019 . This mission has remained his only one to this day.

In June 2019 he led the U23s in three friendly matches as captain on the pitch.
