Gabriel Umpiérrez

Gabriel Umpiérrez (born May 23, 1970 ) is a former Uruguayan athlete and current coach.

Education and career

Umpiérrez began his school education at Escuela Nº133 in Montevideo and continued it there at Liceo Nº10 "Carlos Vaz Ferreira". As part of his active sporting career, he was active in running competitions on the middle distance. In 1993 he was Uruguayan champion over 800 meters and over 1500 meters . He defended the 800-meter championship title in each of the following two years. In 1994 he took part in the Ibero-American Championships in Mar del Plata . There he took 6th place in his 800 meter run. In the 1500 meter final he was tenth. He was also part of the Uruguayan team at the 1995 South American Championships . That year he was the best-placed Uruguayan at the Corrida de San Fernando in Punta del Este . In 1998 he successfully completed his athletics trainer training at the Instituto Superior de Educación Física and continued to qualify in this area on a regular basis in the following years. From 2001 to 2012 he worked as an individual trainer. From 2000 to 2008 he was also the athletic trainer of Club Andresito . His protégés Jorge Carsin and Waldemar Cotelo were Uruguayan marathon champions from 2001 to 2004. He also trained Martín Mañana , José Luis Pérez and Laura Bazallo . In 2005, 2006 and 2007 he was national coach for the Uruguayan cross-country runners at the South American Championships.
