Waldemar Cotelo

Waldemar Cotelo (born March 12, 1964 ) is a former Uruguayan athlete .

Career

The 1.73 meter tall marathon runner Cotelo was a member of the Uruguayan squad at the South American Games in Peru in 1990 and won the gold medal in the marathon. He ran a South American and Uruguayan record with 2:18:57 hours. On April 7, 1991, he ran his personal best on the marathon course with a time of 2:16:56 hours in Santa Rosa . In August of that year he took part with the Uruguayan team in the Pan American Games in Havana in 1991 and finished ninth with a run time of 2:29:30 hours. At the Ibero-American Championships in 1994 he was fifth over 10,000 meters with a run time of 29: 27.29 minutes. In the marathon, he also started as a member of the Uruguayan Olympic team at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta . In the final ranking he finished 79th . In September 2001 he took part in the Ibero-American half-marathon championships organized by the Confederación Atlética del Uruguay (CAU), the Uruguayan Ministry of Sport and Youth and the Intendencia Municipal of Montevideo and came sixth as the best-placed Uruguayan. That year he won the Mar del Plata marathon . During his career, Cotelo also became Uruguayan marathon champion under the training direction of Gabriel Umpiérrez .
