Gabriela Zapolska , also Gabryela Zapolska (born March 30, 1857 in Podhajce near Łuck (now Ukraine ), † December 17, 1921 in Lemberg ), actually Maria Korwin-Piotrowska , was a Polish writer .

Life

Zapolska was the daughter of a wealthy landowner who, against her parents' wishes, joined a wandering group of actors in 1879 . She performed in many Polish cities and made a guest appearance in Paris between 1890 and 1895 . In 1902 she founded a drama school in Cracow , which she also directed for several years. She also made a name for herself as a theater critic .

As a leading exponent of Polish naturalism , she was also influenced by Émile Zola and criticized the position of women in society , especially in her novels . She wrote part of her work under the pseudonyms Józef Maskoff and Walery Tomicki . She achieved special significance through her plays, her most important, the tragic comedy Moralność pani Dulskiej (The Morals of Ms. Dulski) from 1906 is still played frequently today.

A nine-volume edition of her novels was published in 1924 by the Berlin publishing house Oesterheld & Co. , which testifies to her enormous popularity in Germany.
